## Volvo EX90: A New Leader in the Electric SUV Sector
Volvo has historically been at the forefront of automotive safety and aesthetics, and now the Swedish car manufacturer is making impressive advancements in the electric vehicle (EV) realm. The newest entry in Volvo’s all-electric offerings is the EX90, a three-row SUV that stands as the brand’s latest flagship model. In contrast to many manufacturers that launch their EV journey with a premium, high-priced vehicle, Volvo adopted an alternate strategy by first concentrating on smaller, budget-friendly electric models. Now, with the EX90, Volvo is set to make a mark in the luxury electric SUV market.
### A Fresh Platform for a New Chapter
The EX90 is constructed on a completely new platform designed specifically for larger electric vehicles. This platform will also be utilized by other brands under the Geely umbrella, such as the Polestar 3, which has already attracted attention for its performance and aesthetics. The EX90 is a fraction longer than the Polestar 3 and provides three rows of seats, accommodating either six or seven passengers based on the setup.
The exterior aesthetics of the EX90 are both attractive and practical, showcasing understated curves around the rear wheels and a roof-mounted lidar unit reminiscent of a London taxi. Inside, the SUV is outfitted with thoughtful design elements, including generous storage compartments, grocery bag hooks, cup holders, and USB-C ports.
### Performance and Powertrain Choices
The EX90 features two powertrain configurations: the Twin Motor and the Twin Motor Performance. The entry-level Twin Motor variant begins at $79,995, delivering 402 horsepower (300 kW) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque. The Twin Motor Performance model, priced at $84,995, elevates that to 509 horsepower (380 kW) and 671 lb-ft (910 Nm) of torque. Both versions incorporate a rear electric motor that surpasses the front in power, facilitating clutch-based torque vectoring and enabling the disconnection of the rear wheels for enhanced coasting.
The SUV is powered by a 111 kWh battery pack (with 107 kWh usable), boasting an EPA-estimated range of 310 miles (499 km). The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in only 30 minutes using a DC fast charger, or from 0% to 100% in approximately 15 hours with a 32A Level 2 charger.
### Driving Impression
In a test drive in Newport Coast, California, the EX90 Twin Motor Performance impressed with its driving comfort, especially at highway speeds. The adaptive air suspension, included in the $4,350 Ultra pack, effectively masked the SUV’s significant weight of 5,688 lbs (2,580 kg). However, the ride became less stable over low-speed bumps like potholes, where lateral motions could be better managed.
The EX90 is also equipped with a well-tuned one-pedal driving mode, which promotes smoother speed transitions. The SUV can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in merely 4.7 seconds, positioning it among the swifter options in its category. However, the initial throttle response can be quite assertive, potentially causing discomfort for passengers.
### The Tech-Savvy Edge
Volvo has equipped the EX90 with state-of-the-art technology, although some features are not fully operational yet. The SUV includes a Luminar lidar system located above the windshield, which is currently collecting data but hasn’t yet been integrated into the vehicle’s advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Once active, the lidar will allow the EX90 to identify other road users, including pedestrians, from a distance of up to 820 feet (250 meters), even under low-light conditions.
Additional ADAS features such as front cross-traffic warnings, straight crossing path recognition, and curve speed assistance have also experienced delays and will be activated through future software updates. Moreover, the EX90’s capability to charge your home or set charging schedules isn’t available yet, along with the plug-and-charge function.
### The Shortcomings
Although the EX90 presents numerous advantages, it has its drawbacks. The third row of seating, which is among the SUV’s selling points, feels cramped and is more appropriate for small children. Adults may find it uncomfortable, especially on longer journeys.
Additionally, the EX90’s phone-as-a-key feature, which employs ultra-wideband technology, encountered some challenges during testing. The SUV intermittently failed to recognize the phone, and at one instance, it wouldn’t start, necessitating a technician’s involvement. Other issues included malfunctions with the active driving aid and the air suspension, although these seemed limited to the test vehicle.
### Concluding Thoughts
The Volvo EX90 is an ambitious and well-crafted electric SUV that shows much potential. However, it’s evident that the vehicle requires a bit more time for development before it can completely fulfill its promises.
