For many years, technology aficionados and Chromebook supporters have been yearning for a genuine flagship Arm-powered Chromebook—one that could compete with the performance and efficiency of top-tier Windows laptops. Many believed that Qualcomm, with its Snapdragon X Elite chips, would take the lead. However, in an unexpected turn, it’s MediaTek that is taking center stage with its newly introduced Kompanio Ultra processor, specifically engineered for the upcoming Chromebook Plus devices.
When Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon X Elite in late 2023, it seemed inevitable that Chromebook makers would integrate it soon. After all, Arm processors are known for their appealing blend of power efficiency and performance—two elements that Chromebooks desperately need to optimize. Yet, rather than Qualcomm, it’s MediaTek that is making the first significant leap with its Kompanio Ultra chip.
MediaTek’s announcement came as a shock, particularly with the company’s established footprint in the budget and mid-range Chromebook space. The Kompanio Ultra, in contrast, represents a different level of performance. It utilizes a 3nm manufacturing process, boasts an all-big-core CPU architecture, and is compatible with LPDDR5X memory. MediaTek claims to offer up to 18% faster CPU performance and can provide up to 20 hours of battery life—metrics that could transform our expectations for a Chromebook.
Arm processors have historically been lauded for their energy efficiency, leading to extended battery life and cooler operation—attributes that are perfect for slim and lightweight devices like Chromebooks. However, until recently, most Arm-based Chromebooks were relegated to the budget category, often compromising on performance for the sake of lower costs.
This makes the Kompanio Ultra a transformative upgrade. It promises to deliver both performance and efficiency, a combination that has been hard to find in the Chromebook market. Devices such as the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 11 have demonstrated the potential of Arm-powered Chromebooks, yet they’ve never quite achieved the status of genuine productivity machines.
Another significant change is the expansion of the Chromebook Plus program. Previously, only devices equipped with Intel Core i3 12th Gen or AMD Ryzen 3 5000 series chips (or superior) could carry the “Plus” designation. This excluded otherwise capable devices like the Duet 11, which met all other criteria but utilized a MediaTek Kompanio 838 processor.
With the advent of the Kompanio Ultra, Google seems to be relaxing those restrictions, potentially permitting high-performance Arm-based Chromebooks to earn the Chromebook Plus label. This is a noteworthy development that could unleash a wave of new premium Chromebooks that combine affordability with robust performance.
The Kompanio Ultra isn’t solely focused on horsepower and battery longevity. It also integrates the NPU 890, a neural processing unit capable of 50 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), tailored for on-device generative AI tasks. This positions the chip to remain viable for AI-driven applications, a burgeoning trend in both consumer and enterprise technology.
Furthermore, gamers are considered as well. MediaTek asserts that the Ultra can smoothly run popular Android games at a steady 60fps, making it a solid choice for casual gaming while on the move. This could enhance Chromebooks’ versatility, enabling them to handle work, leisure, and everything in between.
The most shocking aspect of this narrative is Qualcomm’s lack of involvement. Despite possessing powerful chips like the Snapdragon X Elite, the company has not yet made a notable entry into the Chromebook arena. This has created an opportunity for MediaTek to step in and take the lead.
It remains unclear why Qualcomm has been slow to respond. It might be due to strategic focuses, pricing considerations, or simply a disinterest in the Chromebook market. Regardless of the reasoning, MediaTek now finds itself in a position to dominate a market that Qualcomm could have easily led.
With the Kompanio Ultra on the verge of release and changes to Chromebook Plus criteria, we can expect a new generation of Chromebooks that will be thinner, lighter, more powerful, and more efficient than ever.
