Android 16 Unveils Revolutionary Multitasking Functionality on Certain Pixel Devices

Developers now have the opportunity to investigate the capabilities of connected displays with the latest beta of Android 16. This innovative feature, included in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 release, enables developers and selected Pixel devices to boost productivity by effortlessly linking to external monitors. Users can transfer apps between their mobile device and extended displays, improving the utility of functionalities like Samsung DeX. This advancement, built upon last year’s desktop windowing preview, turns Android devices into portable CPUs, facilitating work on larger screens. Upon connection to an external display, a “desktop session” is initiated, allowing the phone and display to function independently. Android 16 debuts a taskbar for streamlined app management and provides flexible window tiling for enhanced multitasking. These features are available for evaluation on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series.
