WPC Unveils Qi2 25W Standard, Anticipating Adoption by Key Android Devices

It appears that we can look forward to improved and swifter wireless charging for upcoming Android devices.

What you should be aware of:
– The World Power Consortium (WPC) has unveiled its latest Qi2 v2.2.1 for wireless charging, referred to as Qi2 25W.
– According to the WPC, this version offers greater power than the initial Qi2 version, providing users with even faster wireless charging, which had become a significant criticism.
– The press announcement indicates that while iPhones will be incorporating this technology, “major” Android smartphones will also provide it to consumers.

The World Power Consortium (WPC) has revealed its new developments in wireless charging, and Android is certainly part of the action.

This week, the WPC shared in a press release that it has introduced a “new, quicker charging” Qi version, named Qi 2.2.1, otherwise recognized as Qi2 25W. Fady Mishriki, chair of the WPC’s Board of Directors, noted, “Consumers will be thrilled when they experience Qi2 25W as it offers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The count of devices in the Qi2 25W certification line-up for launch is unparalleled, as is the quality and variety of our members’ product designs.”

Building on Mishriki’s assertion, the WPC indicates that its Qi2 25W wireless charging version addresses an issue many smartphone manufacturers have faced: fast-charging protocols. It also tackles a key complaint consumers have conveyed to the WPC, which pertains to faster wireless charging, having previously been restricted to 15W.

Now, two years on, the WPC claims it has introduced a new protocol/version that can “facilitate genuinely high-speed Qi-certified wireless charging” for device makers and users.

While iPhones are part of this, the WPC announces that “major Android smartphones” will also officially embrace Qi2. The announcement states “14 devices, receivers, and transmitters” have already achieved certification for Qi2 25W. Nevertheless, there is more to come, as the WPC mentions “full-scale” certification has begun for an even greater surge of devices pending Qi2 25W certification.

Qi2 is coming to more Android devices

The WPC’s announcement did not specify when consumers might see new devices launched with Qi2 25W, as that likely depends on the manufacturers. As we move into the latter half of the year, there is a possibility that we will start to notice these devices emerging more frequently, and significantly in 2026.

Android users have been anticipating this since January when the WPC indicated that consumers would observe an “acceleration in Android devices with Qi2 integrated during 2025.” Over this period, Samsung and Google have firmly committed to the Qi2 wireless charging initiative alongside the WPC. According to Samsung, “You can anticipate Android devices supporting Qi2 from Samsung Galaxy devices in 2025.”

We’ve already witnessed this with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, which supports Qi2 at 15W (although it does not feature internal magnets).

On the other hand, Google has become “dedicated to the Qi2 wireless charging standard.” The company has also established itself as a prominent partner to the WPC in creating its Qi2 v2.2 standard that is currently being announced.
