Google Wallet, a widely used digital payment service, has implemented a new requirement for Android users: location permission is now essential for showing maps and addresses on payment receipts. This update, rolled out in late July, means users must activate “Precise location” in the app to keep viewing store details and maps on their receipts. Earlier, these details were shown automatically without any extra actions.
For users who have not turned on location access, receipts will not include map information, and a notification will prompt them to establish location access for upcoming transactions. It is crucial to understand that enabling this feature will not update past transactions with maps or addresses; it only pertains to new payments thereafter.
To enable this feature, users can access a recent receipt in Google Wallet and follow the prompt to “Set up location settings,” which directs them through the process of turning on “Precise location” for the app. This update does not introduce any new capabilities to Google Wallet receipts but ensures that current map and address information is displayed with user agreement.
The choice to mandate explicit location permission is designed to eliminate confusion among users who might otherwise question why maps are absent from their receipts. By requesting location access, Google guarantees transparency and user control over the data shown in their digital transactions.
