Analyst Warns of Limited Demand for iPhone 17 Air While Maintaining Apple Stock Rating

In a recent note to investors, Bank of America Research analyst Wamsi Mohani shared his perspectives on the market outlook leading up to Apple’s highly anticipated event on September 9, where the iPhone 17 series is expected to be revealed. Mohani’s insights reflect widespread views among Apple watchers about the forthcoming devices.

He mentioned that several media outlets and technology websites have indicated September 9 as a probable launch date for the iPhone 17, although this has yet to be officially verified. Mohani stated that pre-orders are projected to commence on September 12, with the new iPhones hitting store shelves by September 19. The analyst emphasized a key aspect of the upcoming launch: the introduction of a sleeker model, the iPhone 17 Air, which is intended to succeed the existing Plus version. While previous alterations in design have generally resulted in a marked boost in sales during new iPhone cycles, Mohani noted that investor anticipations concerning the effect of a lighter phone are more reserved on this occasion.

Regardless of these more measured expectations, Mohani upheld a “Buy” recommendation on Apple stock, establishing a price target of $250. This target exceeds the latest prediction from Morgan Stanley, which was set at $235. However, it is important to mention that Morgan Stanley’s projection was made just prior to Apple’s most recent quarterly results, which could have swayed their assessment.

Apple has officially announced the September 9 event, dubbed “Awe dropping.” During this presentation, the company is likely to unveil not just the iPhone 17 series—including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max—but also the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and potentially new AirPods Pro 3 and AirTag 2.

As the event nears, 9to5Mac will deliver comprehensive coverage of all announcements and developments.
