As part of their REFRAME event today, Vimeo has revealed support for various new 3D video formats on Apple Vision Pro, in addition to other new features.
In October of the previous year, Vimeo launched an app for Apple Vision Pro that supports Apple’s Spatial Video format. Today, they are broadening their support for Apple Vision Pro to include VR180 video. They have also shared intentions to back Apple Immersive Video and Apple’s Projected Media Profile by the year’s end.
Here’s an overview of how these formats vary and what they imply for Apple Vision Pro users.
### VR180
VR180 stands out as one of the most popular 3D video formats in existence. It offers a broad 180° field of view, typically in stereoscopic 3D. Since capturing only one direction is needed as opposed to 360° video, VR180 is generally simpler to produce, suggesting that its support will likely introduce a rich array of VR content to Apple Vision Pro.
### Apple Immersive Video
Apple’s favored format for 3D visuals on Apple Vision Pro is Immersive Video. These clips are filmed in stereoscopic 8K and Spatial Audio. They utilize a specific projection algorithm that takes into account the exact camera employed, resulting in reduced distortion compared to VR180’s standard projection method. This is the format Apple has utilized for all their original content on Apple Vision Pro, including the newly released Wild Life episode featuring orangutans.
At present, Apple Immersive Video is accessible only in the Apple TV app outside of mainland China, and on the Migu Video and Tencent Video apps within mainland China. Vimeo’s backing will be the first genuine third-party platform for Apple Immersive Video content.
Apple Projected Media Profile, or APMP, is a novel format unveiled at WWDC25. It accommodates 180°, 360°, and Wide FOV video. This media profile permits 3D cameras to define a projection algorithm, camera specifications, and more, facilitating easy viewing of the captured videos on Apple Vision Pro. Vimeo’s support for APMP will empower “creators to capture in Blackmagic cameras, edit in Final Cut Pro, and distribute directly via Vimeo.”
### Other new features
In addition to these new 3D video formats, Vimeo has also introduced several other new features today:
– Ask Your Library: advanced AI-enhanced search of your Vimeo library
– MCP support: connect video libraries directly to AI agents and LLMs
– Vimeo Review: innovative ways to manage video sharing feedback with your team and clients
– Answer Engine Optimization: automatically create rich metadata such as titles and chapters to enhance search and discoverability

### Final thoughts
Experiencing immersive content is Apple Vision Pro’s primary advantage, and it’s exciting to witness companies like Vimeo persistently supporting it. I’m eager to see what fresh content will arise in these new formats!
