David A. Patterson, a groundbreaking computer scientist, is renowned for his work in computer architecture, notably as a co-developer of Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC), which transformed processor design. He has co-written several books, including the influential “Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach.”
David holds the title of UC Berkeley Pardee Professor Emeritus, has been a Google Distinguished Engineer since 2016, serves as the RIOS Laboratory Director, and is the Vice-Chair of RISC-V International.
In 2017, he was awarded the Turing Award alongside John L. Hennessy “for pioneering a systematic, quantitative approach to the design and evaluation of computer architectures, significantly impacting the microprocessor industry.”
In this episode, he joins Kevin Ball to discuss his life and career. Kevin Ball, also known as KBall, is the Vice President of Engineering at Mento and an independent coach for engineers and engineering leaders. He co-founded and was CTO for two companies, founded the San Diego JavaScript meetup, and organizes the AI Inaction discussion group through Latent Space.
