OpenAI has identified young Indians as a strong market segment. Today, the company reported that nearly 50% of ChatGPT users in India are aged 18 to 24, with those under 30 making up 80% of its user base.

In India, a significant portion of ChatGPT’s usage is work-related, with 35% of messages focused on professional tasks, higher than the global average of 30%.

OpenAI’s coding assistant, Codex, is gaining popularity in India, being used three times more than the global median. The weekly utilization of Codex has quadrupled since its Mac app launch, with Indian users asking thrice as many coding questions compared to the median. These trends match Antropic’s report showing 45.2% of Indian tasks for Claude involve software.

Beyond work, 35% of ChatGPT messages from India request guidance, 20% seek general information, and another 20% involve writing assistance.

India ranks as OpenAI’s second-largest market, boasting over 100 million weekly users. To engage this audience, OpenAI has introduced a subscription under $5 and previously launched promotional campaigns to increase usage.

“AI adoption is advancing faster than we can track,” stated OpenAI’s chief economist Ronnie Chatterji. “Our approach is to provide factual evidence to support informed AI discussions in India.”

These developments coincide with OpenAI’s active presence in India, coinciding with the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. OpenAI plans to open offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru and has partnered with Tata Group for 100 megawatts of AI capacity and to implement ChatGPT Enterprise within TCS.

Additionally, OpenAI has formed collaborations with fintech Pine Labs, travel companies Ixigo and Makemytrip, and delivery service Eternal. They’ve also partnered with educational institutions to provide tools to over 100,000 students in the next six years.
