OpenAI is reportedly developing its first hardware, a smart speaker equipped with a camera, expected to be priced between $200 and $300, as per The Information. This device would recognize objects nearby and overhear conversations, featuring a facial recognition system for transactions similar to Face ID.

OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s hardware firm last May in a $6.5 billion deal, and details about their hardware endeavors have gradually emerged. The initial product won’t be a wearable and is not anticipated to release before March 2027. Other tech giants, including Apple, are also aggressively venturing into AI gadgets with projects like smart glasses and AI-augmented accessories.

Furthermore, The Information mentions that OpenAI might be working on smart glasses and a smart lamp. However, the glasses might not be widely available until 2028, and while prototypes like the smart lamp have been developed, the final decision on releasing them remains uncertain as OpenAI’s hardware strategy is still nascent.
