The Ambient IoT Alliance to Promote and Develop Standards for Batteryless IoT Devices with Energy Harvesting

2 Min Read

The Ambient IoT Alliance (AIoTA) is a worldwide coalition across various industries, aiming to establish standards for battery-free IoT devices powered by energy harvesting.

Ambient IoT refers to devices powered by ambient energy sources like radio waves, light, motion, or heat, building upon IoT and RFID technologies with lower costs and scalable solutions through Bluetooth, 5G Advanced, and the IEEE 802.11bp standard for ambient power communication.

The alliance aims to “promote and support the development of an open, harmonized, and aligned multi-standard ecosystem”. Ambient IoT devices can collect data like location and temperature, communicating via mobile devices or standard gateways with compatible standards. This reduces maintenance since batteries aren’t needed, and AIoTA notes the data generated will aid AI applications.

The alliance was first introduced on February 19, 2025. Founding members include Atmosic, Infineon, Intel, PepsiCo, Qualcomm, VusionGroup, and Wiliot, all invested in advancing ambient IoT solutions and interoperability.
