After first testing its AI-powered “Prompted Playlists” in New Zealand and recently launching in the U.S. and Canada, Spotify announced on Monday it’s now introducing the feature to Premium subscribers in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.
Prompted Playlists enable users to create custom playlists by simply describing what they want in their own words. Instead of searching for specific songs or artists, users can express the vibe, scenario, or inspiration they have in mind, and Spotify will handle the rest.
To use the feature, users tap “Create,” select “Prompted Playlist,” and enter any prompt in English. The feature interprets themes like moods, aesthetics, and memories. Prompts can be broad or specific, referencing musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, instruments, or even a playlist inspired by a TV show, movie, or milestone. Users can indicate if they want the playlist to include mostly new music or just music from their library.
After submitting a prompt, Spotify’s AI generates a tailored playlist based on the request, drawing from the user’s listening history and current music and cultural trends. Each song includes a brief explanation of why it was chosen for that playlist.
Users can fine-tune their playlists by adjusting prompts or starting over. For those with evolving musical tastes, playlists can be set to automatically refresh daily or weekly.
Since this feature is still in beta, Spotify noted there may be changes based on feedback, and there are current usage limits. Some users have reported reaching limits after roughly 20 or 30 prompts.
Recently, Spotify expanded AI features, including Page Match, allowing users to scan a book page to jump to the corresponding spot in the audiobook, and About This Song. The platform also updated its song lyrics feature for global translations and offline access. SeatGeek partnered with Spotify to offer concert ticket links on an artist’s page or tour dates within the app.
Internally, AI runs through Spotify’s workflows, with co-CEO Gustav Söderström noting the best developers haven’t written code since December due to AI.
Spotify is expanding its audiobook business, venturing into physical book sales, soon allowing U.S. and U.K. users to buy physical copies directly from the app.
