Amazon’s AGI Lab Leader is Leaving

1 Min Read

David Luan, who was leading Amazon’s development of the Nova Act AI browser agent, is leaving the company after less than two years. The head of Amazon’s San Francisco AI lab announced on LinkedIn that he would depart at the end of the week to explore new ventures focused on developing new capabilities for AI systems, stating the proximity of AGI as a reason for his shift in focus. His exit comes as Amazon faces challenges in the AI arena, with internal criticism labeling its products as “Amazon Basics.” Recently, Amazon launched Alexa Plus in the US, although some early users prefer the original Alexa. Luan joined Amazon in 2024 from his startup, Adept, which created AI agent technology licensed by Amazon. At Amazon, Luan worked on the Nova AI models, including the Nova Act AI agent launched in March as a research preview, capable of performing web searches, making purchases, and answering questions, and integrated into Alexa Plus.
