Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Wear Elite platform is poised to transform the forthcoming generation of smartwatches, such as the upcoming Galaxy Watch, by incorporating a robust Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for elevated on-device AI functionalities. This innovation was revealed at MWC 2026, representing a notable advancement in wearable technology.
The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform presents Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU along with an eNPU system crafted for low-power processing, allowing smartwatches to execute intricate AI operations directly on the device. This minimizes the dependence on connected smartphones or cloud-based servers, thereby enhancing latency and responsiveness. The platform’s framework accommodates a broad spectrum of AI usages, including face and object recognition, which can facilitate real-time control of the device.
Ziad Asghar, Qualcomm’s senior vice president of XR and spatial computing, emphasized that even in the absence of AI functionalities, users will experience enhanced performance and prolonged battery life. The platform’s five-core CPU, featuring upgraded graphics capabilities, guarantees quicker app launches and more fluid operations. The integration of AI enables on-device handling of functions like automatic speech recognition and text production, providing tailored user experiences.
The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform extends beyond smartwatches; it is intended for an array of wearable formats, such as pins, pendants, and glasses. This versatility fosters a unified ecosystem where multiple devices collaborate to enhance user interaction. The platform’s efficiency is further amplified by a 3nm process node, promising up to 30% improved battery life compared to earlier models.
Consumers can anticipate the arrival of Snapdragon Wear Elite-powered gadgets, including the new Galaxy Watch, in the latter part of the year. Qualcomm is partnering with leading brands like Samsung, Google, and Motorola to launch these cutting-edge wearables, heralding a new era of intelligent, AI-enhanced wearable technology.
