The Pixel 8 and newer models will offer a desktop-like experience when connected to an external monitor.

Google is introducing a desktop mode to its Pixel phones and tablets as part of their March Pixel update. This feature allows users with a Pixel 8 and newer to connect their device to an external monitor via USB-C, providing a desktop-like multi-window experience.

The new desktop mode supports mouse and keyboard input and is compatible with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The Pixel Tablet also receives a desktop windowing feature, offering a familiar interface to arrange and resize overlapping windows.

While Google hasn’t released images of these new experiences, the company has been hinting at a desktop experience for Android. Previously, Google announced they were collaborating with Samsung to enhance Samsung’s DeX feature, which automatically adapts your phone’s layout when connected to a larger display. Google also allowed Pixel 8 and newer users to test these features starting in June.
