Report: TikTok Declines to Add End-to-End Encryption to Direct Messages

1 Min Read

According to a report from the BBC, TikTok will not implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages (DMs) on its platform. The social media company argues that this technology would compromise user safety, as it could hinder police and safety teams from accessing messages when needed.

TikTok indicated that this choice is intentional to set itself apart from competitors and safeguard users, especially younger ones, from potential harm.

End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and receiver of a direct message can see its contents.

The company noted that direct messages are secured with standard encryption like services such as Gmail. Only authorized employees can access these messages, and only in specific situations, such as responding to legitimate law enforcement requests or reports of harmful behavior from users.

This form of encryption is commonly used by popular apps like Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger (for 1:1 personal chats and calls), Apple’s Messages, and Google Messages.
