Apple Music is updating how record labels and distributors can identify AI-generated or AI-assisted content during uploads to the platform. According to Music Business Worldwide, Apple informed its industry partners on Wednesday via a newsletter about introducing new metadata for transparency regarding AI usage in music. Metadata typically includes details like song titles, album names, genres, and artist names, which help organize files. Now, Apple Music offers metadata tags that distributors can use to indicate AI involvement in aspects of a song, such as artwork, track (music), composition (lyrics), or music video. This addition seems to align with user interest; a Reddit user recently shared a concept for a similar feature. However, the voluntary nature of this tagging relies on labels or distributors to consciously flag their AI usage. Spotify is adopting a similar strategy. Other platforms, like Deezer, are working on in-house AI detection to flag content, but achieving high accuracy remains challenging. TechCrunch has contacted Apple for further details.
