Author Andy Weir revolutionized the astronaut portrayal in movies. Traditionally, films like “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Gravity,” and “Interstellar” showcased space travel as serious business. However, Matt Damon’s role in “The Martian” painted it with humor, transforming Weir’s novel into a critically acclaimed comedy. Now, “Project Hail Mary,” adapted by Drew Goddard and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, features Ryan Gosling, continuing the cheerful astronaut legacy.

Think of a mix between “The Martian,” “Half Nelson,” and “E.T.” to imagine “Project Hail Mary.”

Project Hail Mary explores an existential threat.

Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a science teacher thrust into a mission to stop a cosmic threat consuming the sun. He becomes part of a global effort, helmed by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), aiming to study this phenomenon and save humanity. However, Grace wakes up with no memories, complicating his mission. His ally? An alien named Rocky, offering unforeseen assistance.

Ryan Gosling shares brilliant onscreen chemistry with an alien puppet in Project Hail Mary.

Grace and Rocky must overcome communication barriers, innovating together for mutual understanding. James Oritz voices and puppeteers Rocky, creating a dynamic partnership with Gosling. Grace grows from an eccentric astronaut into someone deeply human, learning the value of connection.

Ryan Gosling delivers a standout performance in Project Hail Mary.

While Gosling has played an astronaut before in “First Man,” this role combines his comedic and dramatic talents, reminiscent of his past characters. His portrayal adds emotional depth to Weir’s story, aided by a strong script from Goddard. “Project Hail Mary” delivers an engaging cinematic experience, ideal for theaters.

Project Hail Mary opens in theaters and IMAX on March 20.
