Samsung executive Won-Joon Choi noted that the extra thickness needed for magnets is not a worthwhile compromise, as most users are likely to buy a case anyway. Instead, Samsung chooses to use that space for larger batteries or to create slimmer devices.
Nonetheless, Samsung is investigating the integration of magnets in future models, with ongoing research aimed at ensuring that no internal compromises are required during the process. Apple, on the other hand, has successfully implemented MagSafe into its slim iPhone Air, proving it is feasible to preserve both functionality and battery longevity.
Samsung’s strategy leaves the standardization of magnet positioning and strength to third-party case makers, which can result in varied experiences with accessories.
