Update: Mar. 11, 2026 This review, originally written in January 2023, is revised with my experiences with the PetSafe ScoopFree series, reflecting the changes in my household since then.
As someone who’s expanded my cat family and litter setup, I’ve tested various litter box options. The costly Litter-Robot is not always ideal, especially in tight spaces or with cats uncomfortable with its design. Thankfully, the PetSafe ScoopFree offers a practical alternative, functioning like a self-cleaning litter grate familiar to most cats.
The ScoopFree’s compact size makes it perfect for limited spaces, fitting seamlessly in small bathroom areas. While my cats Sansa and Leota have different preferences, the ScoopFree remains a reliable choice for automatic scooping without the need for a large litter appliance.
This ScoopFree is a great option for limited floor space
The compact design of the ScoopFree fits well in small spaces other litter boxes might oversize, offering a discreet and efficient solution for my cats.
How does the PetSafe ScoopFree work?
The ScoopFree features motion sensors and a metal grate that automatically cleans the litter after use, depositing waste into a covered compartment and using silica gel crystals to control odor.
Changing trays is straightforward, though it requires lifting the frame off the old tray for replacement. Regular “refreshing” between tray changes is necessary to maximize the lifespan of the trays and manage odor.
The automatic raking isn’t the fanciest, but it’s still so convenient
The ScoopFree simplifies litter box management, ideal for trips and lazy days. Its automatic cleaning feature is convenient, though it may not control odor as effectively as other models.
Can you use any litter in the ScoopFree litter box?
The ScoopFree is best used with silica crystal litters. Other litters, especially clumping types, are incompatible due to their weight and texture.
Downsides: Light manual upkeep is needed every few days
The ScoopFree requires occasional light scooping to prevent odor and extend the tray’s usability, though it mitigates daily cleaning chores significantly.
The “disposable” aspect isn’t eco-friendly and involves recurring costs
Consider the environmental impact and ongoing costs associated with disposable trays, opting for a stainless steel tray to reduce waste and costs over time.
Is the PetSafe ScoopFree worth it?
The PetSafe ScoopFree balances cost, convenience, and reduced maintenance, making it a recommended option for those looking for an upgrade from manual litter boxes without the expense of a robotic alternative.
