If you had plans to make any birthday wishes or wish upon a star, the trailer for the upcoming horror film *Obsession* might make you think twice.
From Focus Features, written and directed by Curry Barker, *Obsession* tells the story of Bear (Michael Johnston), a hopeless romantic with a deep crush on his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). To make sure she feels the same, he breaks the mysterious “One Wish Willow,” wishing for Nikki to love him more than anything. He certainly gets his wish, and much more.
The latest trailer for *Obsession* reveals that the “One Wish Willow” makes Nikki instantly infatuated with Bear. However, what begins as affectionate quickly turns sinister. Nikki’s obsession with Bear grows a hundredfold, turning her into a terrifying version of herself, driven mad by her magical love for him. (The trailer leaves us wondering whether the blood on her is her own or someone else’s. Either way, it’s concerning!)
The trailer indicates that the spell of the “One Wish Willow” only fades with the wisher’s death, meaning Bear is trapped in the situation he’s created for life. Perhaps next time, simply asking out your crush would be better than wishing for undying love and entangling both of you in a horrific magical mess! Just a suggestion.
*Obsession* will be screened at SXSW and hits theaters on May 15.
