In 2023, an unidentified foreign hacker breached the FBI’s New York field office, accessing files related to the investigation of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, reports Reuters. The breach was facilitated by a vulnerability on a server at the Child Exploitation Forensic Lab caused by an FBI special agent’s oversight. Court documents indicate that the hacker examined specific files connected to the Epstein case. An FBI spokesperson confirmed that the investigation continues and assured that the affected network had been contained and secured after the incident, describing it as isolated. Reuters reported that the hacker was unaware of the breach into the FBI until agents requested a video call, presenting their credentials to the hacker.
