Zendesk is set to acquire Forethought, a company that develops software for automating customer service interactions, as announced by the companies on Wednesday. The acquisition is projected to conclude by the end of March.
Forethought, ahead of its time, clinched victory in TechCrunch Battlefield, the startup pitch competition, in 2018. For context, ChatGPT did not debut until late 2022.
Post its Battlefield triumph, Forethought attracted prominent clients like Upwork, Grammarly, Airtable, and Datadog, reportedly supporting over a billion monthly customer interactions by 2025.
The deal terms remain undisclosed. Forethought raised $115 million in total funding with investors such as Blue Cloud Ventures, NEA, Industry Ventures, Neo, Village Global, and Sound Ventures, alongside individual investors like May Habib (Writer), Scott Wu (Cognition), Karan Goel (Cartesia), and Gwyneth Paltrow, stated during a $25 million funding round last year.
In a LinkedIn post, Forethought AI co-founder and chairman Deon Nicholas lauded the acquisition as a milestone. He highlighted their initial bold vision of AI transforming customer experience, which has now become a reality across industries.
Before the acquisition news, Nicholas appeared on TechCrunch’s Build Mode podcast, discussing his preparation for Battlefield victory, initial customer acquisition, and prospects for agentic tech like browser control.
Notably, applications for the 2026 TechCrunch Startup Battlefield are now open.
Zendesk, recognized for its self-help customer service solutions, plans to support Forethought’s existing clients and incorporate the startup’s technology into its AI offerings—such as specialized agents, self-improving AI, and voice automation. The acquisition reportedly advances its product roadmap by over a year.
Zendesk has been privately owned since a consortium led by private equity firms Hellman & Friedman and Permira acquired it in November 2022, for $10.2 billion. Not disclosing deal terms aligns with its historical pattern. Since its 2007 inception, Zendesk has made about a dozen acquisitions, selectively revealing financial details, such as $29.8 million for Zopim in 2014 and $45 million for BIME in 2015.
