Netflix Reportedly Spends $600 Million on Ben Affleck’s AI Startup

1 Min Read

Last week, Netflix announced the acquisition of InterPositive, an AI company co-founded by Ben Affleck that aids filmmakers in editing footage during post-production.

This deal could be valued at up to $600 million, according to Bloomberg, potentially ranking among Netflix’s largest acquisitions. The most Netflix has historically paid was around $700 million for the Roald Dahl Story Company.

While Netflix hasn’t confirmed the details publicly, sources suggest the cash payment might be less, with InterPositive owners eligible for additional payouts based on performance targets.

InterPositive provides tools for filmmakers to work more efficiently in post-production, addressing continuity issues or enhancing scenes, without generating new content or using footage without permission.

This acquisition aligns with Netflix’s broader push to integrate AI in content production. Netflix has previously employed generative AI in original shows and movies, such as creating a building-collapse scene in the Argentine series “The Eternaut.”

Rivals are similarly advancing AI efforts. Amazon is developing in-house AI teams for film and TV projects, while Disney has entered into an agreement with OpenAI.

However, there are concerns. Film industry workers have expressed worries about potential job losses and whether AI companies are fairly compensating creators for training data.
