Google Maps has undergone a significant transformation, which Google cites as the most extensive update in over ten years. This major overhaul introduces two groundbreaking features: Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation.
Ask Maps incorporates Google’s advanced Gemini models, enabling users to inquire about destinations through conversational questions. This AI-driven tool allows for specific queries, like finding charging spots without lining up for coffee. The feature utilizes data from over 300 million locations and contributions from more than 500 million community members to curate personalized itineraries. It references user preferences for tailored recommendations and assists with reservations and sharing locations.
Immersive Navigation represents a revamped map experience, offering a 3D navigation format that mirrors real-world environmental elements such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and architectural structures. This new look promises redesigned visuals and intuitive guidance. The update also includes enhanced notification systems for routes, conversational voice guidance, parking suggestions, and real-time traffic alerts. The immersive feature aids in choosing between current directions and alternative routes with added context.
The Ask Maps feature launches today in the U.S. for iOS and Android, with a desktop version to follow soon. Immersive Navigation will gradually roll out across various platforms, including CarPlay and Android Auto.
