FBI Investigates Malware Hidden in Steam Games

1 Min Read

The FBI is probing a hacker believed to have uploaded video games with malware onto Steam, the popular PC game platform, according to the agency’s announcement on Friday. The FBI is seeking victims potentially affected and has identified the following games as likely developed by the same cybercriminal over the last two years, available on Steam but containing malware: BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.

This incident is not unprecedented, as hackers have previously managed to distribute malware through the Valve-owned marketplace. Last year, multiple games were discovered on Steam containing malware. While the games were somewhat basic, their true intent was to serve as Trojan horses, deceiving gamers into installing malware on their systems. Steam eventually removed these games, but the scope of the infection remains uncertain.

Valve and the FBI did not comment on the situation.
