A recent study reveals that all tested headphones contain trace amounts of harmful chemicals, though manufacturers assert they comply with regulations. Certain European retailers have pulled some models after this EU-funded study discovered hormone-disrupting chemicals in headphones from major brands like Apple, Beats, and Samsung. The study tested 81 headphones, finding substances like bisphenols and phthalates, known for posing health risks. Despite low concentrations, the widespread presence of these chemicals in products raises concerns, especially for vulnerable populations. Apple AirPods Pro 2 and JBL Tune 720BT were among those receiving “green” ratings, indicating the lowest risk, while some products from JBL and Razer scored “red” for high concerns. Manufacturers, while complying legally, question the study’s methodology. The study aims to shed light on consumer exposure to these chemicals and advocate for stronger regulatory actions and transparency in the industry.
