Better luck next year.

Timothée Chalamet has once again failed to secure the Best Actor Oscar, marking his fourth loss in this category. This time, the accolade slipped away for his portrayal of Marty Mauser in Josh Safdie’s film, Marty Supreme. Despite receiving nine nominations, the film did not win any awards. The competition was intense, with Michael B. Jordan winning for his dynamic role in Sinners.
Chalamet’s loss was celebrated by some sections of the internet, perhaps due in part to recent controversial remarks. In an interview with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet downplayed ballet and opera as art forms “no one cares about”, which sparked backlash. Though the context of his comments was more nuanced, the incident seemed to be the last straw after what many view as an oversaturation of Chalamet in the media, owed to the extensive press circuits for A Complete Unknown and Marty Supreme.
The ceremony itself reflected less favorably on Chalamet due to negative spotlight from his interview remarks, even being referenced by host Conan O’Brien. Despite this current wave of backlash, it’s likely not the end of his nominations, with Dune 3 set to release later this year.
