Bethesda describes it as “the biggest update to the game since launch.”
After numerous rumors, it’s official: Bethesda’s sci-fi epic Starfield is coming to the PS5. It will be available on Sony’s console on April 7th, and this release will coincide with two significant game updates — one paid and one free. Bethesda has termed this as “the biggest update to the game since launch.”
Firstly, there’s the PS5 edition, arriving approximately three years after Starfield debuted on Xbox and PC. (Originally, the game might have been a PS5 exclusive before Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda.) The new version will utilize the features of the PS5’s DualSense controller, such as the light bar, adaptive triggers, and touchpad. Additionally, the PS5 Pro will offer two modes: one for enhanced frame rate and another for improved visuals.
Starfield joins other Xbox games that have transitioned to the PS5 and other non-Microsoft platforms, including titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Forza Horizon 5, the Oblivion remaster, and even Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Regarding updates, the first is a paid expansion named Terran Armada. It is a traditional story enhancement similar to 2024’s Shattered Space, introducing a new questline with fresh characters, locations, enemies, and quests. The DLC allows players to influence humanity’s future in space by facing the Terran Armada’s robotic forces.
There’s also a free update titled “Free Lanes,” which significantly enriches the game. It includes new locations, such as dungeons to explore, a new resource for upgrading weapons and ships, an additional land vehicle, the ability to access storage at multiple outposts, and new crew members for your squad. Moreover, there’s an update for the New Game Plus mode, allowing you to carry a limited number of items on a new run.
Bethesda refers to these updates as “the next chapter for Starfield, bringing its most complete and refined experience to more players as the universe continues to expand,” suggesting more content may come in the future. Along with the fresh content and platform, the base version of Starfield will also be discounted to $49.99 to attract new players.
