BMW Reintroduces the i3 as a Stylish Four-Door EV

2 Min Read

BMW has introduced its new class of electric vehicles, starting with the iX3 SUV, but expanding beyond that with the new i3. The i3 shares the core motor, battery, and electronics with the iX3 but brings a familiar sedan shape and BMW’s characteristic design. While similar to the iX3, the i3 has an emphasis on horizontal lines. Despite sharing a name with the earlier electric i3 hatchback, the new i3 is entirely different, built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, featuring a new battery design for higher energy density. The i3 offers an estimated 440 miles per charge, with fast charging adding over 200 miles in about 10 minutes. The i3 50 xDrive model features dual motors and all-wheel drive, but single-motor and quad-motor options are possible. Both motors lack permanent magnets, avoiding rare earth materials and allowing for a coast without a disconnect system. BMW’s new control system largely relies on regenerative braking, resulting in minimal wear on physical brakes and a smooth stop experience. The i3 delivers 469 horsepower and 476 pound-feet of torque, approaching the performance of the M3 models. Although heavier than its combustion-engine counterpart, it retains short overhangs with a larger wheelbase, resulting in a spacious interior. Inside, the i3 includes tech from the iX3, such as a Panoramic Vision system, heads-up display, and a large touchscreen. The capacitive touch controls are easier to navigate, and the i3 provides advanced driver-assistance technology, referred to as “symbiotic,” which works in harmony with drivers. The i3 will include advanced onboard software from Qualcomm and Samsung, along with future OTA updates for enhanced features. An upgraded in-car voice experience with Amazon’s Alexa Plus will also be available. Pricing is unconfirmed, but it’s expected to start around $60,000 in the US, with manufacturing starting in August.
