An old Twitter feature is set to make a comeback on X. According to X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, the platform plans to introduce a dislike button for replies, rolling out soon. Bier hinted at the feature with a screen recording, showing its potential functionality to inform the algorithm of content users dislike. This addition will help the platform understand user preferences better.
The dislike button is a thumbs-down icon, located between the “like” and bookmark buttons. When tapped, it prompts users to provide feedback on the reply, with options like “Not interested,” “Misleading,” “AI-generated,” “Spam,” or “Report post.” The feedback remains private, without a public dislike counter.
This feature harks back to a similar system tested by Twitter in 2017 and later in 2020. Then, the platform explored a dislike system, but it didn’t catch on. A global test in February 2022 used a downvote arrow akin to Reddit, but it was discontinued. However, code hints in the iOS app in 2024 suggested the downvote feature’s potential revival.
Now, X is seriously considering its introduction, with Bier openly discussing it. While not yet publicly available, the dislike button seems imminent, offering users a more personalized content experience.
