The latest model from the Chinese startup’s AI is rumored to be released in April, but some aren’t convinced it’s a stealth launch.

A powerful, anonymous AI model quietly appeared on the developer platform OpenRouter last week, sending the tech world into speculation that it’s a stealth test run from Chinese AI startup DeepSeek.

The model, named Hunter Alpha, emerged on March 11 with no developer attribution attached. According to Reuters, when tested directly, the chatbot identified itself as a Chinese AI model with a training data cutoff of May 2025 — matching DeepSeek’s chatbot. When asked about its creator, the system did not respond. Neither DeepSeek nor OpenRouter has claimed it or provided comments to Reuters.

The company released its latest models last December: DeepSeek-V3.2 and DeepSeek-V3.2-Speciale, both offered for free. V3.2 was positioned as an everyday AI assistant comparable to OpenAI’s GPT-5, while V3.2-Speciale targeted more complex reasoning tasks, with DeepSeek claiming outstanding results at the International Math Olympiad.

The speculation about the model is fueled by its specs. Hunter Alpha is listed on OpenRouter as a one-trillion-parameter model with a context window of up to one million tokens — specifications that closely align with DeepSeek’s anticipated V4 model, potentially due in April according to Chinese reports.

“Reasoning style is hard to disguise and tends to reflect how a model was trained,” AI engineer Daniel Dewhurst told Reuters, hinting at the model’s thought patterns as indicative of DeepSeek.

However, not everyone is sure. Benchmark tester Umur Ozkul told Reuters that his analysis suggests Hunter Alpha might not be DeepSeek V4, pointing out architectural differences from DeepSeek’s existing systems.

Whatever it is, the model has processed over 160 billion tokens since its platform appearance, indicating it is being utilized extensively whether its origins are known or not.
