A U.S. vehicle breathalyzer company, Intoxalock, experienced a cyberattack, leaving drivers nationwide unable to start their vehicles. According to Intoxalock’s website, the company is dealing with system downtime following the March 14 attack. Intoxalock provides breathalyzer devices installed in vehicle ignition systems for individuals who must provide negative alcohol breath samples to operate their cars. Spokesperson Rachael Larson confirmed the cyberattack to TechCrunch, noting that systems were paused as a precaution.

The cyberattack has prevented Intoxalock from performing necessary device calibrations, causing delays for customers needing calibration to start their vehicles. Reddit users reported that cars cannot start without calibration, effectively stranding drivers. News reports highlight widespread impact, with examples from Maine where an auto shop had cars stuck due to the issue. Reports also indicated effects from New York to Minnesota, where drivers are stuck because their breathalyzers can’t be calibrated promptly.

Intoxalock has not disclosed specifics about the cyberattack, such as if it involves ransomware, a data breach, or if any ransom demands were made. Serving 46 states, Intoxalock claims to aid 150,000 drivers annually. The company has not provided a recovery timeline.
