Automattic has introduced writing capabilities to WordPress.com’s MCP integration, allowing AI agents like Claude and ChatGPT to create posts, build pages, manage comments, and restructure content through natural conversation, with human approval required at every step.
Previously, connecting an AI agent to a WordPress.com site allowed for passive interaction, such as querying site analytics or checking for outdated posts. On Friday, Automattic enabled direct content creation and modification via its MCP integration.
WordPress.com launched write capabilities for its Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration, allowing AI agents to interact directly with site content. This update includes 19 new operations across six content types: posts, pages, comments, categories, tags, and media. AI agents can draft and publish posts, build landing pages, handle comments, reorganize categories, and update alt texts with a single prompt.
Initially introduced in October 2025, MCP standardizes how applications provide context to language models. It was initially read-only but now includes write capabilities. Updates included OAuth 2.1 authentication and an official Claude Connector. The new feature emphasizes human approval; any changes by the AI require confirmation before proceeding.
Deletions move items to trash, retrievable for 30 days, while categories and tags require additional confirmation before permanent deletion. All actions are logged in the Activity Log, and user role permissions are enforced.
The AI can also adapt to the site’s theme, incorporating design specifications into new pages or posts. These capabilities are available on all WordPress.com paid plans, enabled through the MCP dashboard. Compatible clients include Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, and any MCP-enabled tool. WordPress.com, powering over 43% of websites globally and holding a 60.5% CMS market share, offers considerable scope for these write-capable AI agents.
The MCP ecosystem is growing rapidly, with the WordPress MCP Adapter potentially being included in WordPress Core. Automattic’s other products, like WooCommerce and Beeper, also have MCP implementations. The focus is shifting towards standardized AI agent access rather than one-off integrations. For WordPress.com users, trust is key, with the approval model and granular operation toggles highlighted as central elements of the new capabilities.
