1 Min Read

Openreach, a BT subsidiary operating the UK’s largest broadband network, has partnered with Google Cloud to introduce AI solutions for expanding full-fibre broadband to 25 million premises by 2026 and decarbonising its fleet of 24,000 commercial vans. The collaboration aims to use BigQuery for fleet management, analysing telematics data to identify optimal routes for electric vehicle deployment, reducing CO2 emissions by 10,000 tonnes annually, minimising idling, and predicting maintenance needs. For broadband expansion, Openreach uses Vertex AI to create a digital twin of UK transportation networks, streamlining the extension of full-fibre services. Utilizing Gemini Enterprise for SQL query conversion, Openreach has halved the time-to-insight, enabling data engineers to focus on new solutions. Openreach supports over 680 service providers and has reported revenues of £6.157 billion. Its £15 billion investment in full-fibre is a significant undertaking in UK telecoms, with no disclosed financial terms for the Google Cloud partnership.
