Today brings significant news for app developers. Contrary to expectations for reduced App Store commissions, Apple announced a major update to its App Store Connect service, where developers oversee app publishing, management, and performance tracking across Apple platforms.

This update introduces over 100 new metrics for tracking monetization and subscription data, enhancing developers’ understanding of app performance in in-app purchases and offer effectiveness.

While third-party platforms like data.ai, Sensor Tower, and RevenueCat provide app performance insights, App Store Connect’s new metrics offer the unique advantage of utilizing Apple’s own data instead of estimates.

New features include exportable subscription reports via an API, enabling offline performance analysis and integration with developers’ systems. Developers can also gain insights into user behavior, examining factors such as download date, source, and offer commencement. This allows developers to assess user engagement over time and compare results across different regional expansions.

The update also introduces peer group benchmarks, helping developers evaluate their performance against competitors in areas like download-to-paid conversions and revenue per download.

Apple emphasizes user privacy by using aggregated cohort data and implementing differential privacy techniques to protect individual developer performance.

Developers can now apply up to seven filters to refine metric views in App Store Connect. Additionally, Apple released a new App Store Analytics Guide in the Help section, aiding developers in formulating data-driven strategies and understanding App Store tools.

The timing of this overhaul is intriguing, as AI capabilities advance. There’s speculation that AI agents could render traditional app stores obsolete, with industry figures like the CEO of smartphone maker Nothing suggesting smartphone apps might disappear.

Nevertheless, Apple aims to integrate AI into its thriving App Store ecosystem. Bloomberg reports Apple plans to unveil an AI-powered Siri at its developer conference this June, capable of performing tasks within apps.
