An upcoming update aims to deter X users from outside the US from discussing American politics. On Tuesday, X’s Head of Product, Nikita Bier, announced changes to the platform’s creator payouts, but Elon Musk stated the changes aren’t implemented yet. Bier mentioned the platform will prioritize impressions from a creator’s home region, intending to reduce engagement farming via political content. The proposed change may address an issue highlighted in November, where a feature showed the origin of users’ accounts, revealing that many accounts discussing American politics weren’t US-based. Despite this, X removed account origin data due to inaccuracies from travel, VPNs, and proxies. Bier indicated that political commentary is welcome, but payouts won’t go to overseas content. However, Musk later posted that the changes are paused for further evaluation, indicating the update set for Thursday won’t proceed.
