OpenAI Suspends Erotic Chatbot ‘Indefinitely’

OpenAI has halted plans to launch an “adult mode” for ChatGPT as it refocuses on core products. The Financial Times reported that the project, which featured sexualized content, is “indefinitely” shelved following concerns from employees and investors about the societal impacts of such content. This decision follows the discontinuation of OpenAI’s text-to-video platform Sora and is part of a strategic reevaluation prompted by CEO Sam Altman’s “code red” alert in response to increasing competition. OpenAI plans to research the effects of explicit chats and emotional AI attachments further, although no empirical evidence currently exists. Concerns about moderation and child safety also contributed to the delay of the adult mode.
