New RCS Update May Eventually Connect iPhone and Android Video Calls

1 Min Read

The RCS Universal Profile 4.0 introduces interoperable video call support in messaging apps. This new standard, announced by the GSM Association, allows iPhone and Android users to potentially initiate 1-to-1 or group video calls through RCS chats using the Messaging‑Initiated Video Calls (MIVC) feature. MIVC enables users to join ongoing video calls they initially missed and synchronize call logs within the chat timeline, creating a seamless video call experience across different devices and networks. However, Apple and Google have yet to announce support for this feature, leaving it uncertain when it will be available in messaging apps. RCS Universal Profile 4.0 also includes text formatting options like bold, italics, and strikethrough, and supports sharing high-quality audio, video, and images.
