Review: I Tried the New Sonos Play Speaker, Part of the Audio Company’s Big Comeback

1 Min Read

Sonos introduced a new portable speaker called the Play, which sits between the existing Move 2 and Roam 2 in terms of size. The company aims to recapture the market after previous app-related setbacks. While the Roam 2 lacks sound quality and the Move 2 is too heavy, the Play finds a balance with its 1.3kg weight. Wrapped in a black mesh, it features a waterproof design up to IP67 and comes with a long-lasting 24-hour battery. Although it offers loud sound and deep bass, its audio isn’t as refined as the Move 2, especially at higher volumes. The Play can act as a portable battery, charging other devices like a phone via its USB-C port. The Sonos app, which previously faced issues, has improved but still contains some quirks. The Play’s sound, portable size, and battery life make it appealing, but its $299 price is considered steep. Despite this, it’s a good choice for those already in the Sonos ecosystem. Available in black and white, the Play offers a sweet spot for a portable Sonos speaker, albeit at a premium.
