Netflix prices in the United States keep increasing, but in Italy, the company might have to change course. A Rome court recently declared Netflix’s price hikes over the past seven years illegal, requiring the company to refund its Italian customers. The court’s decision noted that Netflix failed to adhere to Italy’s Consumer Code by raising subscription fees without justification. The judgment, as reported by Euro News, found Netflix in violation of this code during 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2024.

Each affected subscriber is eligible for a discount on their subscription and a refund for past overcharges. Some might receive additional compensation, according to Reuters.

Netflix plans to appeal the verdict, asserting their commitment to consumer rights and confidence that their terms align with Italian laws and practices.

The lawsuit was initiated by the consumer advocacy group Movimento Consumatori. In a recent press release, the group criticized Netflix’s response. “Should Netflix truly prioritize customer rights, it would respect the court’s decision and issue refunds, thus avoiding prolonged litigation and reputational damage,” said Alessandro Mostaccio, the group’s president.

More than 25,000 Italian Netflix users have approached Movimento Consumatori concerning the price hikes. The group’s legal representatives, Paolo Fiorio and Corrado Pinna, expressed surprise at Netflix’s assertion of legal compliance. “In Europe and Italy, market practices must not contradict the law, which Netflix did by enacting illegal price increases,” they commented.
