Amidst heightened interest in U.S. domestic manufacturing, Turner Caldwell, a former Tesla employee, believes there’s insufficient focus on the minerals and metals at the base of the supply chain. This perspective led him to establish Mariana Minerals in 2024, a startup aimed at modernizing mining and refining operations to increase refined metal output. Mariana Minerals strives for extensive automation within mining operations.
Recently, the company announced a partnership with Pronto, which specializes in autonomous systems for haulage trucks and off-road vehicles at mining sites. This marks Pronto’s first deal since being acquired by Atoms, a robotics venture run by Travis Kalanick, reuniting him with Pronto’s founder, Anthony Levandowski.
Next week, autonomous trucks will begin operations at Copper One, a former copper mine in Utah acquired by Mariana last year. The financial terms remain undisclosed. This collaboration involves more than just autonomous vehicles. Pronto’s technology will integrate with Mariana’s “MineOS,” autonomously dispatching trucks and managing routes without human intervention.
Caldwell envisions a future for mining with multiple automated operating systems using reinforcement learning to manage mine operations. He compares the current state of Western mining companies to industries before key technological shifts driven by companies like Tesla and SpaceX.
Caldwell sees the stagnation in the mining sector as a limitation, both in output and potential efficiency. He argues there’s an existential challenge due to a shrinking labor pool within the industry, exacerbated by limited new infrastructure projects. Mariana’s software-focused approach aims to address this while owning and running its operations enhances data quality and decision-making, similar to how AlphaGo revolutionized chess strategies.
Despite automation’s role, Caldwell emphasizes he’s not removing humans but expanding the talent pool. The goal is increased productivity and more operational mines, suggesting new job creation even with a reduced labor force.
