Is AI responsible?
Motorola, typically a reliable brand for budget phones in the U.S., is experiencing some changes this year. Ars Technica noted that several 2026 updates of Motorola’s affordable lineup have seen notable price increases. Models like the Moto G, Moto G Play, and Moto G Power have risen by 33 to 50 percent in 2026. Previously priced at $180, the Moto G Play is now $250. Additionally, the 2026 Moto G Stylus debuted at $500, up $100 from last year.
In response to price inquiries, a Motorola spokesperson stated, “Pricing is always subject to change based on market conditions. We regularly assess pricing to remain competitive and offer strong bundles and promotions for consumer value.”
While phone prices often increase to reflect hardware or software enhancements, the new Moto G Stylus retains the display and memory specs of last year’s model. Brands usually enhance specs alongside price hikes.
The ongoing memory shortage, driven by AI data center development globally, seems a potential cause of price increases. This shortage has also led to game console price hikes and SD card shortages. Tariffs and inflation further add pressure.
Is a pricier phone justifiable if it includes new AI features? Consumers must decide. Motorola, like many tech firms, is fully embracing AI.
