The Pura X Max is debuting with a ‘passport’ aspect ratio similar to the rumored iPhone foldable.
Huawei is poised to beat Apple and Samsung to the market with a foldable phone featuring a boxy, wide aspect ratio. The company has unveiled the design of its upcoming Pura X Max, launching in China next week, which shares a form factor resembling early leaks of the iPhone Fold.
Details about the Pura X Max are scarce but will be fully revealed on April 20th, along with the colorful Pura 90 series. Early images from Huawei showcase blue, white, orange, and black variants, each sporting a triple rear camera. The rear design, incorporating gridded sections with varying textures, mirrors the design of the original Pura X launched last year and maintains Huawei’s tradition of wider foldables, distinct from current trends.
While the Pura X was marketed as a flip phone with a unique portrait orientation upon opening, the X Max combines elements of traditional flip and book form factors, akin to early foldables like Google’s first-gen Pixel Fold or Oppo’s initial Find N. Huawei’s promotional material features the open phone being used in both portrait and landscape modes.
Recently, an alleged first dummy unit of Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone surfaced, hinting at a similarly wide design. Samsung is also rumored to be developing a broader variant of its Galaxy Z Fold phones. However, foldable devices from both companies aren’t expected until later in the year.
