Roblox Launches ‘Kids’ and ‘Select’ Accounts for Age-Appropriate Game and Chat Access

2 Min Read

Roblox announced a new set of account types that provide age-appropriate chat and game access for kids and younger teens. This change aligns with the company’s recent implementation of mandatory age checks for chat access, beginning in January. The same age verification technology will apply to assign these new account types. Users who haven’t completed age checks will only access games suitable for younger audiences.

Children aged five to nine will receive a “Roblox Kids” account, while those aged nine to 15 will get a “Roblox Select” account. Individuals 16 and over will maintain a standard account. Only users 18 or older can access content labeled as “Restricted,” which includes themes like strong violence and mature language.

The new accounts will be available globally from the beginning of June, with a transition period to allow current users to complete age checks.

Roblox Kids accounts will feature games with “Minimal” or “Mild” ratings, which involve mild violence and occasional crude humor. Chat is disabled by default for users under nine, with parental controls allowing specific contact permissions. Roblox Select accounts will have access to “Moderate” rated games and chat features for similar-aged users.

Parents can approve additional games for their children, allowing younger users to join older siblings in unlisted games.

Both Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts feature games vetted through a rigorous three-step screening. Developers must pass verification, including ID checks for those under 16, two-step verification, and an active Roblox Plus subscription. Roblox Plus offers exclusive benefits and will replace Roblox Premium’s new sign-ups after its April 30 launch.

Games undergo real-time evaluation with older users to provide feedback and reports before allowing younger users. Roblox will also apply a multimodal moderation system and require specific content maturity labels for gameplay suitability.

These changes follow legal challenges, with lawsuits from Louisiana and Texas attorneys general, addressing child safety concerns after reports of exposure to grooming and explicit content on Roblox.
