Today’s Moon Phase: What the Moon Will Look Like on May 1

1 Min Read

The Full Moon, the first of two in May, is known as the Flower Moon. Today, May 1, the Moon is in its Full Moon phase with 100% of it lit up, as per NASA’s Daily Moon Guide. You can observe the Mare Serenitatis, Tycho Crater, and Copernicus Crater without visual aids; with binoculars, see the Posidonus Crater, Archimedes Crater, and Alphonsus Crater. A telescope reveals the Apollo 16 landing spot, Rima Hyginus, and Fra Mauro Highlands. The next Full Moon in North America is on May 30, possibly peaking on May 31 elsewhere. The Moon takes about 29.5 days to orbit Earth, displaying eight phases: New Moon (invisible), Waxing Crescent (right sliver lit), First Quarter (right half lit), Waxing Gibbous (more than half lit), Full Moon (fully lit), Waning Gibbous (losing light on the right), Third Quarter (left half lit), and Waning Crescent (left sliver lit).
