The Academy Awards organization released new Oscar rules addressing the use of generative artificial intelligence.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated that only performances credited in the film’s legal billing and performed by humans with their consent will qualify for Academy Awards. Similarly, screenplays must be human-authored to be eligible.
The academy also reserves the right to request additional information about a film’s AI usage and human authorship.
These changes coincide with an independent film featuring an AI-generated Val Kilmer, AI “actress” Tilly Norwood’s ongoing headlines, and the impact of new video models on filmmakers. AI was a significant issue during the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes.
Outside Hollywood, a novel was pulled due to apparent AI use, with writers’ groups declaring such work ineligible for awards.
