Starting May 20th, 2026, Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer have access to the Kindle Store. Amazon announced that these devices won’t be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store, though users can still read already downloaded books and access purchases via the mobile app, Kindle for Web, or newer devices. Deregistered or factory reset devices cannot be re-registered post-deadline. Affected devices include Kindle 1st Gen (2007), Kindle DX models, Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4, Touch, and 5 (2011-2012), the first-gen Kindle Paperwhite, and several Kindle Fire models (2011-2012). Users will be notified via email. Amazon will offer a 20% discount on newer devices and a $20 ebook credit until June 20th, 2026. Previously, in 2016, users of these older models were required to update their software to maintain Kindle Store access, but now these devices will no longer be supported.
