Anthropic Files Lawsuit Against Pentagon Amid Rise in Claude Downloads

1 Min Read

Anthropic’s AI app, Claude, is surging to the top of global download charts despite the Trump administration’s ban. Anthropic is challenging the Pentagon’s decision to label it a national security threat by filing a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The company claims it’s being targeted for its commitment to safety, refusing to allow its AI to be used for lethal warfare or mass surveillance. Despite the ban, Anthropic is gaining over a million new users daily. Its app leads the Apple App Store in 16 countries, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini in over 20 markets. A contentious standoff emerged when the Pentagon, under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, sought to expand AI use, impacting Anthropic’s contract as the primary AI provider for the military. Talks fell apart, leading to a deal with OpenAI. Anthropic argues that the government’s actions, including designating it a supply chain risk, infringe on the First and Fifth Amendments and the Administrative Procedure Act. The suit seeks to declare these actions unlawful and halt their enforcement.
