Apple Broadens Worldwide Age Verification Initiatives with New Approaches in the UK

3 Min Read

Tech trends can be tricky to identify early on, but there is a notable exception at present: the age verification mandate that an increasing number of nations and US states are implementing.

Apple is affected by some of this legislation, as particular apps are designated for adult audiences only, and the company has so far rolled out age verification in three nations.

### Apple Age Verification in the UK

The most prominent rollout of Apple age verification has occurred in the UK. Participants in the developer beta track got a sneak peek at the new age verification system in iOS 26.4 Beta 2. The company later clarified that this was a mistake and that it shouldn’t have been part of the beta at that moment, but it launched shortly thereafter.

For many users, the process was completely straightforward, taking under 30 seconds. Users only needed to tap a confirm and continue button, and Apple noted that the duration of their Apple account was utilized to verify their age as 18 or above.

Nonetheless, some users ran into issues with the process timing out or failing to finalize. Apple has since offered additional acceptable methods to verify age, including confirming age with a credit card or by scanning a driver’s license or any of the following PASS-accredited Proof of Age cards: CitizenCard, My ID Card, TOTUM ID card, or Young Scot National Entitlement Card.

If users fail to verify their age, they will be categorized as a child or teenager, resulting in the activation of both the web content filter and communication safety features.

### Now Live in Singapore and South Korea Too

A recent Apple support document indicates that age verification has also been implemented in Singapore and South Korea. These age confirmation stipulations apply to Apple Accounts in these areas. Adults will need to verify their age to utilize certain services or features, or perform specific actions on their accounts.

In Singapore, users can confirm their age using a credit card or by scanning a driving license, National Registration Identity Card, or Foreign Identification Number (FIN) card. Passports, debit cards, and gift cards are not acceptable.

In South Korea, to download or stream adult content through Apple services, users must confirm that they are at least legally 19 years of age. The verification process involves entering personal details that correspond with what is on record with the mobile carrier.

### Minimum Age Requirements for Child Accounts

In many countries, a child is not permitted to have their own Apple account; they must instead belong to a family sharing group. In the US, the minimum age for an individual child account is 13. However, some countries have set higher age restrictions for personal accounts:

– 14 in Austria, Bulgaria, mainland China, Cyprus, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, South Korea, and Spain
– 15 in Czechia, France, Greece, Peru, and Slovenia
– 16 in Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, and Slovakia
– 18 in Brazil

As age verification regulations continue to be implemented worldwide, we can anticipate that more countries will be added to this list.
